What is acne?
Acne is a chronic condition transcending age, race, and gender. Although the cause of acne in unknown, hormones and stress are considered to be contributing factors, while heredity determines the severity of the condition. Contrary to popular belief, the disorder is not restricted to teenagers, not is it caused by junk food, dirt, or oily skin. Acne is defined as a disease of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles marked by the eruption of pimples and other acne related blemishes affecting the face, chest, and upper back. While not a life threatening condition, acne can lead to serious skin damage often resulting in permanent scarring.

Who gets acne?
Most people between the ages of 12 and 17 have experienced at least an occasional acne breakout. Although not curable, the occurrence of acne can usually be managed with nonprescription treatments. Normally, the condition lasts no longer than 10 years and disappears on its own. How does acne happen?
While triggered by various things, acne happens when androgen levels rise, causing the sebaceous glands to enlarge and increasing the amount of sebum secreted into the follicular canal. Simultaneously, the lining cells of the folliclar canal obstruct the exit of sebum to the surface by clumping together instead of sloughing off one by one. The obstructed canal is also known as a clogged pore. If the obstruction remains below the skins surface its called a whitehead. If it reaches the surface, it is considered a blackhead. At times, the excess dead lining cells and increased sebum cause the follicular wall to rupture resulting in the development of bacteria. The process leads to inflammatory acne including pimples, redness, and irritation.

Why does adult acne occur more often in women?
Androgens, a leading contributor to acne breakouts, stimulate the development of sebaceous follicles and attached oil glands. This is more of a problem for women since they produce greater amounts in the adrenal glands. Stress also stimulates the adrenal glands, therefore making it the other leading factor contributing to acne breakouts in adult women. These two factors affect women greatly during menstrual cycles, adolescence when hormones are very active, and even pregnancy.
